I cherish three experiences going to Brazil. First, meeting the friendly Gauchos of Rio Grande do Sul and the Cariocas of Rio de Janeiro. Second, climbing the top of Cristo Redentor statue in Corcovado. Third, seeing the international airport in Rio de Janeiro named after a musician - Antonio Carlos Jobim. Of course, Australia has Kingsford Smith International Airport named in honour of Sir Charles Kingsford Smith, who was a pioneering Australian aviator.

And Ninoy Aquino International Airport in the Philippines is named after former senator Benigno Aquino who is considered a modern day hero. It is interesting for me to see a musician being honoured this way by Brazilians. Next thing to being sacrificing (as probably one of the many things Ninoy Aquino symbolizes in the lives of many Filipinos), we are a very musical people like the Brazilians. And yes, I agree with what Jim Paredes said in one of our chats, Filipino love songs are “martir”.

Anyhow, I love Bossa Nova and a lot of Brazilian things. And I love Original Pilipino Music. Let us learn from the Brazilians who love and are proud of their music.

May the Filipino-Australians now and tomorrow keep adding our sound to the mainstream Australian music landscape. Yes we have plenty of singers and performers. But the questions are, “What is Filipino music?” and “How does it really sound?” I’m sure there will be heaps of opinions and even debates and the answers may remain elusive.
But we continue to sing :)

Here’s an ode to women from the Apo Hiking Society!

WALA NA’NG HAHANAPIN PA
Words and music by Jim Paredes

Mayroon siyang estilong kanya lamang

At biglang maamo ‘pag may kailangan
