MANILA - Four officials of the New Bilibid Prison (NBP) have been sacked as authorities continue to receive reports of contraband items ending up inside the national penitentiary.
“I got disturbing reports that some illegal items were snuck in on December 24 and 25,” Justice Secretary Leila de Lima said.
Relieved were Lucio Guevarra, the commander of the guards at the maximum penitentiary compound; Ricardo Sespene, head of the special patrol unit; Roberto Mandap, the head of the inmate visitation services unit; and Danilo Dador, the officer-in-charge of the maximum penitentiary compound.
De Lima said she is giving Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) Director Franklin Bucayu enough time to prove his worth.
De Lima went to inspect the contraband goods voluntarily surrendered by the gangs.
Items surrendered included guns, ammunitions, cellphones, pocket WiFis, WiFI boosters, mahjong pieces, etc.
She believes not all illegal items were surrendered.
De Lima also issued Department Order 943, creating an oversight committee to continue searching for contraband materials in the NBP. (report from Edwin Sevidal, dzMM; ABS-CBNnews. com)
